My belly ring fell out; should I just get it redone?

I got my belly piercing six months ago. Last month, when it was fully healed, the ball that screws onto the jewelery fell off, which ended up making the whole piercing fall out. My belly piercing didn't have a piece of jewelery in it for two days. After I bought a replacement and put it in, it sort of hurt and turned red. It's been a month and my piercing has been sore and red and the skin around it is hard and always looks super dry, like it's flaking off. Is there any way I can save my piercing? Or would I be better off just taking it out and getting it redone? And if I do end up having to get it redone, how long should I wait after I take my jewelery out to get it redone?
